At Caston we follow the Read to Write scheme of work for English. The Read to Write units are organised in to a 2 Year rolling scheme of learning across Key Stage 1, Lower Key Stage 2 and Upper Key Stage 2.
We use the Literacy Shed reading VIPERS units for whole class reading in Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2.

What is Penpals for Handwriting?
Penpals for Handwriting is a complete handwriting scheme for 3–11 year olds, offering clear progression through five developmental stages. It teaches children a fast and fluent handwriting style to help them achieve their potential in writing.
Penpals uses a combination of DVD-ROMS for whole-class teaching and practice books and write-in workbooks for small group and individual work.
Five unique developmental phases provide clear progression for children aged 3 to 11.
DVD-ROMs support interactive, direct teaching to the whole class using an interactive whiteboard.
Practice books and workbook provide essential practice and reinforcement.
Sky-writing and lesson warm-ups develop the fine and gross motor skills that are crucial for handwriting.
In Years 5 and 6 basic handwriting issues are revised and speed and fluency improved.
No Nonsense Spelling
What is the No Nonsense Spelling Programme?
The No Nonsense Spelling Programme was devised to offer teachers a comprehensive yet accessible progression in the teaching of spelling. Guidance, rather than prescription, is provided on how to teach the strategies, knowledge and skills pupils need to leam.
In Key Stage 2, we have been developing our children's ability to spell linked to a spelling pattern following 'No Nonsense Spelling'. The children are taught daily the spelling rules and patterns, and then we ask for them to continue this practice at home. We hope this new approach will embed the spelling into everyday learning rather than being linked to a stand alone test. The children's weekly spelling words will be sent home with a link to the taught pattern or rule (unless common exception words). The children may want to learn these by: writing them into sentences, 'write cover check' sheets, handwriting patterns or by using one of the many apps available. This is an individual choice- (see ideas below). They will then have a weekly spelling check where the understanding of the use of the word is also checked by writing it into a sentence. This may look different between classes and children due to individual needs. We always like to celebrate progress and individual achievements so class rewards will continue to be used alongside the spelling check. However, the real progress is seen in the child's writing throughout the school day when the spelling words are spelt correctly out of a spelling lesson context.
